This little cycling adventure will take you from the handsome city of Eupen to the busy city of Liège in Belgium. The route follows some cycling RAVeL paths and small roads, crossing fields, some residential areas, old train tracks and finally it goes along the river Meuse all the way to Liège's train station.

Easy or difficult ? For a non-experienced rider this is certainly a full day's activity that's going to feel relatively hard, but manageable. There are plenty of potential break spots, to take it easy. For an experienced rider this can be an easy morning ride.

The Old Coal Mine of Blegny

One of the attractions of this tour is the old coal mine of Blegny which is preserved today as an industrial heritage site, listed by the UNESCO. It's definitely worth to stop here and have a look around. Mind that there is a playground for children on one side, so it can be noisy.

The last stretch is a nice and easy (if you don't catch a head wind) almost flat ride by the river Meuse. For us, it was a perfect wind-free fast section, with the late afternoon sun facing us. If you are unlucky and get a head wind, this last 10 kms will be a little challenging.

The logistics

Eupen and Liège are very accessible, direct trains run from Brussels every hour or so. Liège is on the same train line. Remember that taking your bike on a Belgian train can be tricky, most trains unfortunately are not properly equipped for it, try to avoid the rush weekend hours.

We didn't see many shops on the way so we recommend you to take a picnic with you.

Eupen is a proper touristic city, you will find shops, supermarkets, coffee shops and restaurants. Although the commercial activity is not right at the train station, you'll need to ride a bit towards the city center.

Liège is one of the most important cities of Belgium and its train station is very well equipped.
